FUNDING THE ARTS

After its world premiere (during the company’s 35th Anniversary Season at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in 2010), The Felice Lesser Dance Theater is continuing to develop Felice Lesser’s satire, FUNDING THE ARTS (a spy spoof about the lack of funding for the arts in this country), for a new production, beginning with an LPAC LAB 101 Residency this Fall at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center. Cast members must be able to both act and dance (professional calibre ballet dancers), or move well (in the cases of Boris, Natasha, Zelda, and Brooke) and may double in small movement-based roles (spies, soldiers). While our budget is limited, all performers will be paid for rehearsals and performances.

FUNDING THE ARTS CAST

PRINCIPAL ROLES:

  • LUCINDA, 20s-40s, Prima ballerina and former CIA encryption expert, beautiful and brilliant, in love with Robby, although she tries not to show it.  Pointe work required.
  • ROBBY, 20s-40s, Premiere Danseur and former CIA Agent/Master Thief, handsome and charismatic James Bond type who secretly dreams of settling down and marrying Lu.

SUPPORTING ROLES:

  • BORIS, 50s-70s, Former Head of the KGB, and currently Lu & Robby's Director/Ballet Master. Nice man, completely devoted to his wife, Natasha. (Needs to be able to speak English with a Russian accent.)
  • NATASHA, 50s-70s, ex-KGB Agent, currently Costume (and Poison) Designer for the ballet company. A bit evil with a flair for the dramatic and an early case of Alzheimer’s. (Needs to be able to speak English with a Russian accent.)
  • ZELDA, late 40’s-50s. A diva. A formerly famous choreographer, now a recovering alcoholic making a comeback.
  • BROOKE, mid-30s-mid 40s.  An unknown choreographer trying to catch a break.
